Bayside Youth Groups – July Groups For 2020

As we are all aware with the Covid 19 pandemic, 2020 has been a challenging year and one which has seen us make changes to the way we go about our daily lives. Asperger Services Australia Ltd. (ASA) has continued to prepare for the implementation of some interesting and innovative projects, including the expansion of Youth Groups around the Brisbane area and the rolling out of a series of Life Skills Programs. A peer mentoring program to help participants navigate their way through the program and maintain their momentum will also be introduced later in the year to compliment the life skills program.

Currently, we have a youth group which meets weekly on Friday evenings, at Virginia (North Brisbane) or in the community (ten pin bowling, movies or other activities) and will continue to do so. I am delighted to announce that we are ready to open a second youth group, situated in Capalaba (East Brisbane).

If your child is aged between 14 years and 18 years and diagnosed with ASD 1 (Asperger’s Syndrome) or ASD 2, please feel free to join us at either or both locations. ASA Ltd Youth Groups offer a safe environment for acceptance, social interactions, forming friendships, learning coping strategies, practicing new skills and ultimately having fun.

We will in the future be establishing groups in South and/or West Brisbane dependent on the number of families interested and the availability of appropriate, affordable venues. We will also be looking to have regular monthly family outings to bring the groups together if there is sufficient interest in this.

The key to ASA Ltd being able to offer options to suit as many families as possible is in growing our participant numbers, so please spread the word. Please see (and share) the details overleaf and please complete and return the details on page 3 to register.

Time:               6.00pm – 7.30pm.

Cost:               There is a small cost of $20 per attendance (paid in advance).

Facilitators:     The group is run by experienced volunteer facilitators many of whom have lived   experience.

Purpose:          It is a place for young people to be themselves; learn strategies to reduce anxiety, relating to others and forming friendships. The group will meet every week during term times for activities at the centre and some weeks activities will take place in the community, for example Ten Pin Bowling

For safety reasons we strongly recommend that parents remain at the centre or community venue whilst their child attends. Parents remain responsible for their children throughout the duration of the activity and we have secured a separate room at the centre for parents to meet and share their experiences whilst they wait.
