Farewell to Stefanie Evans

Open Day Event Update

We are sorry to inform you that we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel our Open Day which was scheduled for the 17th July 2021. With the current uncertain environment due to COVID, we felt that continuing with this event would not have been responsible and may have put attendees at risk. We trust that you understand.

As many of you would know, this event was going to be an opportunity for us, and many of you, to farewell Stefanie Evans, our Co-founder and Managing Director, who is retiring after 27 years of volunteering with ASA and supporting the Asperger’s community.

This is a farewell message from Stefanie to say Thank you !

Money Donation

Stef’s wish for the Open Day was to raise funds for ASA and she would love to see donations come through to assist ASA continue the work we do.

Thank you for your continued support.

Steph, we do value your tireless work for those on the spectrum, and the way you have helped create a place that our son has felt accepted, loves being a part of, and has learned meaningful social skills. Since coming to Youth group at the start of 2020, it has been a high point of his week. Having something to look forward to and a place for fun and inclusion is transformational. Thank you for your work in this space and for your wisdoms! You’re leaving an amazing legacy of happier, more understood young people. Thank you!

Hi Stef. Thank you for the input you had in our lives …. It was only through you that we knew that S could do year 12 over 2 years. Fantastic!! Saved us both. Life is still complicated but I’m not sure she would’ve even got this far without your intervention. Big big thank you!!!

You have been the heart and soul of this organisation, helping thousands of people over this time. You always had a great vision for ASA and how it would grow and support the ASD community throughout Australia, now and into the future; and have always been very generous with your time taking calls from people needing support often working long, long hours. It has been a joy to have worked with you for part of your journey, and your counsel and friendship are valued. Have the best retirement!!

Although I have only sporadically attended ASA meetings, I realise I always have a safe and inclusive and fun place to call home at ASA. I love every single person I have met at ASA and am so grateful you have put in so much work to provide wonderful services for all of us on the spectrum.

I would love to keep in touch and hear how your lovely Alexandrines are going! All the best for the future Stef, you are an amazing person and a great influence in my life and for so many others.

      Hi Stef,
I’m not in the best place right now, but I wanted to chirp in and say something also.
Throughout my late ASD diagnosis and beyond, Stef and the Team at ASA have been great. I’m so glad I reached out when I did, it’s made a big impact on my life.
Stef has created a safe space, with lots of guidance and helpful information for people on the spectrum, and their families. There are programs, groups, and support for all age groups, and each life stage.
A big thank you to the Team at ASA, and especially Stef, for keeping ASA up and running, despite the hardships that have been faced.
Best Wishes for your future Stef, and it’s great that your legacy is still going strong.
      Thank you – Raphael.

When our son was first diagnosed at 4 years old, 26 years ago, we floundered trying to understand what to do. Finding ASN was for us a huge relief. We were able to get educated on how best to help him and to share experiences with so many other parents. I remember attending the session with Tony Atwood and Carol Gray at the Bardon Professional Development Centre, and also a program on social skills run by a PhD student at Uni of Qld which was supervised by Kate Sofronoff, just two of so many things we were able to attend because of your hard work with ASN. There are no words to express how deeply thankful we are for how much you have helped so many families. Thank you. Karen Baker.

      Hello Everyone,

Thank you to you all who wrote on the Stef’s Farewell page on ASA’s website and thank you to those that wrote to me privately acknowledging my time at ASA and your kind words.

I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people with and without Asperger’s Syndrome. Having a son on the Spectrum, gave me the opportunity to join ASA 27 years ago. I gained my knowledge by listening to parents of children with Asperger’s Syndrome and later learned from our growing children and adults. I also had the chance to meet with ASD professionals, University researcher and lecturers, politicians and the wider community being interested in Autism. I also thank my husband who supported and encouraged me to be involved with this community.

As you have told me, ASA has made a difference in your life and your family’s life, that is a wonderful acknowledgement which I will treasure for ever.

The world has changed since technology has become part of our daily lives and now the Covid pandemic. We need each other more than ever and my wish is for the new Management of ASA to continue supporting families and individuals under the NDIS and build on our initiative of creating our own ASD family.

I thank you all for your contribution growing and supporting Asperger Services Australia over the years.

I am sure we will bump into each other in the future. 🙂

      Best wishes
      Stefanie Evans

    Empowering the Asperger’s Community

Asperger Services Australia Ltd (ASA), then known as Asperger’s Syndrome Support Network (Qld) Inc (ASSN) was established in 1994 by a small group of parents whose children were diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Most children were early primary school age. In 1995 the group decided to register as an Incorporated Organisation and charity in Queensland with financial membership.
